Is it possible to modify the frame-by-frame export script so the data are exported into an excel (xls or xlsx file) rather than a csv file?

It's possible but requires third-party software to handle the Excel file formats.

However, Excel should automatically import files with a .csv extension into the appropriate structure. If it doesn't, you can use the import utility in Excel to read in data from delimited files.
