Announcing the new Datavyu v1.3.6 with enhanced features and transcription support!

Hey everyone, I have a huge problem with the datavyu-program. I downloaded the "stable" version on my mac book and started working with it by adding a video and starting to code with the spreadsheet. The problem is that it seems to be impossible for me to save my progress. If I try to reopen a previously saved file (I pressed the "save"-button and closed the coding window) an empty spreadsheet will appear and no video. I tried to save the project under a new name and what happened was that the progress was saved under the original file and the new file was empty. But not even that works anymore. It seems to me that the "save"-button is a "delete"-button! I would be very grateful for helping ideas as I already lost a lot of work and time trying to fix this... Thank you in advance!!

I had the same problem Philinchen described, and my steps look to be the same as well. I believe the source of my issue was including a column in the spreadsheet that did not have any codes associated with it (when creating the column, I deleted the default code). This was for a variable in which I just wanted onset and offset of an event, so no code was needed. As soon as I changed that column to have a code (with no intention of actually adding a code in practice) I have been able to save and reopen the file without issue.

I'm using Datavyu 1.2 on Windows 7.

I was able to verify your problem. I have spoken to the developer and we will try to get this fix into the next release of version 1.3.5. Datavyu should remember the videos and their synchronized positions whenever you open a spreadsheet.

Generally, I suggest using the QuickTime plugin to code the data if possible. We have experienced inconsistent timing with VLC and it has not been tested as fully as QuickTime.

I've tried replicating this problem on my mac book and our lab computers and haven't been able to replicate it. I might be missing a step in your process. Could you describe what you're doing in further detail? Also, what video plugin are you using (VLC or Quicktime options that come up in the open dialog when you add a video)?

Thank you for you reply, I will try to explain in further detail:

1) I open datavyu, the spreadsheet and the controller appear. 2) I click on "add data" and choose a video which opens up immediately. 3) I type words in the columns and in the cells in the spreadsheet. 4) I click on "File" --> "Save as" or "Save" (it doesn't work either way) and choose a new file name or an existing file name (makes no difference in the result). 5) The name of the datavyu file changes to the name I gave it in step 4. 6) I close the file. 7) I reopen the file by double clicking on it's name and it is empty (just as if I never saved it) without the video or the changes in the spreadsheet, it doesn't even show the name I previously gave it (it just reads "untitled" like a completely new project). It doesn't open either when I try opening it over "File" --> "Open" or "Open Recent Files" or with the navigation sidebar in the spreadsheet.

My videos are played with Quicktime and in the file format .mpg. Also what may be important to know is that I'm using datavyu 1.2 (I installed the first version first, but then I updated it, deinstalled it and downloaded it again because it was not working).

Honestly, I'm not sure what the issue is. Could you send me a file that you've created using these steps and maybe I can figure out the issue? My email is dmc566@nyu.edu. Also, what OS version are you using on your Mac book?

We have received another case that might be related to this issue.

When using Datavyu versions 1.1.7 and later, there is a new tab system that opens a blank untitled spreadsheet whenever the program opens. After dragging in or double click a coded spreadsheet, the untitled spreadsheet stays open in the first tab of the spreadsheet window. After coding and while attempting to close out of the program, all spreadsheets with edits prompt users to save.

Lastly, the program prompts to save that blank untitled spreadsheet if it was not closed prior. If the original file name is entered during the save process of that blank spreadsheet, the original file will be overwritten by the blank one. The program provides a warning message "File already exists. Overwrite?" and if "yes" is clicked, your file is overwritten by that blank sheet.

Hello. I have a similar problem. The weirdest thing is that, sometimes the software saves the codes but, when I work my data and save, the "untitled" window appear. The solution I found is to do work a sheet per code, and to save it as a csv, to save datas.

Datavyu defaults by opening an untitled spreadsheet. If you do not close it, it will always ask if you want to close it when you are closing datavyu. You can simply choose to not save the untitled blank spreadsheet. This should not limit your workflow at all.

You can treat it like the blank sheet that appears when you open up Microsoft Word.

I'm having a related issue. I Click "Add Data" and add 2 videos; 1 is a .mkv and the other is .mov. I had to use the VLCFX plug to get either of these to open at all.

I add entries into the spreadsheet and then save my file and close. When I reopen the file, the spreadsheet entries are there but the videos I added are gone. I would prefer not to re-add them every time, because they are offset and each time I add them I need to manually re-sync them.

I have tried this on 2 different Macs (10.8 and 10.10), using Datavyu 1.3.4. Same problem on both computers.
